A diverse and populous region of the greater San Francisco Bay Area can be found in Alameda County. This county borders the city and county of San Francisco as well as Contra Costa County.
Geographically, this county is almost synonymous with the term 'East Bay' and spans many cities and areas. It's reaches go as far north as the Berkeley hills, as east as towards the Livermore Valley, and as far south as bordering Santa Clara county.
Historically, Alameda County was derived from a larger portion of Contra Costa County, and a smaller portion of Santa Clara county. Much of its present day urban region with major cities was developed as a suburb of San Francisco in the last two previous centuries. Earlier history reflects progression from Native American lands to Spanish and Mexican ranches, farms, orchards and suburbs with closer association to Contra Costa than other regions.

BART or the Bay Area Rapid Transit is a commuter or public metro system serving a majority of the county and its surrounding neighborhood counties.
