Located in the southern end of the San Francisco Peninsula region in the greater Bay Area, Mountain View is a large suburban city with plenty of walkable streets and is also home to several tech based companies in its present day.
Historically, the cities beginnings were stemmed from its role as popular stagecoach stop in between the route from San Jose and San Francisco, called Mountain View Station in 1864. The township incorporated in 1902, present day streets Phyllis and El Camino Real compromise the road formerly known as San Jose Road.
Agriculture remained is primary industry through the middle of the 20th century, followed by the U.S. Navy's adjacent Moffet Field Complex which brought economic opportunities after the 1930's. Today, high technology is the foundation of the economy, including an on-going long-term relationships and renewable leases with Google, Inc and others.
The active and pedestrian friendly downtown area of Mountain View is centered around Castro Street and features a concentration of highly ranked restaurants, shops, cafes and more.
Geographically, Mountain View borders the cities of Palo Alto and San Francisco Bay cities to the north, as well as Los Altos to the south and Sunnyvale to the east.
Notable parks in the area include Shoreline Park, Shoreline Amphitheater, Shoreline Golf Course and Rengstorff House a National Historic Place.
