One of the larger suburban cities found on the San Francisco Peninsula region is the city of San Mateo. Its location between Silicon Valley and San Francisco has contributed to its historic and most recent development as a much larger and prominent suburban city with a well situated downtown area compared to other cities in the region.
Geographically, San Mateo is located between Burlingame and Foster City to the north, Belmont to the south, Highlands-Baywood and Hillsborough to the west and the San Francisco Bay to the east.
Historically, San Mateo was incorporated in 1894 and has long experienced ongoing development and expansion as early as the year 1789. The origin of its name may have several contributors, including both Spanish colonists referring to this area as the Ranchos "Rancho San Mateo" and later Spanish missionaries that had named a Native American Village along Laurel Creek and the laurels then found int the region as "Los Laureles". Many settlers were drawn to this open meadowland bound by the hills, with several trees, shrubs and rich pastures. It then moved from the archives of Mission Dolores to that of the spot being named "San Matheo" (Saint Matthew) and belonging to that of the mission of San Francisco. As time went on, more of the laurels were removed around the year 1835 and development sprung as many San Franciscans began building summer or permanent homes, mansions and other buildings in this mid-peninsula region after the 1850's. It's development through the twentieth century was due to several historic settlers from in and out of the country and other historic events.
